Former “Firefly” star Alan Tudyk has piloted himself to ABC, where he’ll star in Max Mutchnick and David Kohan’s comedy pilot.
The Kohan-Mutchnick project is based on the partnership between the two writers, who created “Will & Grace.” It centers on two long-time friends and business partners, one straight and one gay; Tudyk will play the latter role, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Tudyk has some comedy experience, including “Dodgeball” and guest spots “Frasier” and “Arrested Development.” “Firefly,” on which he played pilot Hoban “Wash” Washburne, had a healthy dose of humor as well. The role will be his first regular gig on a comedy, however.
Tudyk starred in another pilot earlier this season, a legal drama from Luke Reiter that was set up at NBC. He’s the second cast member to depart that project; Kurtwood Smith (”That ’70s Show”) was recently cast in CBS’ comedy “Worst Week.”

The first issue of the Dark Horse Comics 3 part series “Serenity: Better Days” will be released this month (12 March 08).
“Serenity: Better Days” is based on the planned plot-line for the TV series “Firefly” and will take place before the events of the movie “Serenity”.
Because it’s set to fill in the gap between the series and the movie, fans hope that this means the door is being left open for another movie to carry on where “Serenity” left off.
Parts 2 & 3 will be released in April and May of this year. Another new comic is being planned for 2009. Co-written by Joss Whedon, “A Shepherd’s Tale” will tell the story of Shepherd Book’s past.

Serenity: Better Days Comic

From an interview about casting chemistry with Casting Directors Amy Lippens & Stephanie Laffin…?
Amy Lippens: There’s a longer rehearsal process, so if something really isn’t working in theatre, they can replace the person. Stephanie has a really good story about our new pilot, which is now called All Rise, like “All rise for the great judge.” It’s a law pilot directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and written by Luke Reiter, and it’s almost finished being shot in New York.
Stephanie Laffin: Alan Tudyk needed a love interest on the show. I met Alan when he was just out of Juilliard, and we always wanted to work with him. We had tested the role to play his love interest once and then sort of went back to the drawing board and tested again, and everybody weighed in, and they were like, “Can you take us one more step? Because we want to make sure that this is a realistic relationship.” So we ended up having to do a screen test with them in our office. [The actors] both went for it to the point that it felt like you were seeing into their relationship.
Lippens: They made it steamy because they had to, because it was a love scene of them together just getting into bed and talking about things. It was just Stephanie and I in my office. Stephanie had to film it, and we’re normally not those people. We got a little embarrassed. But the actress, Christina Vidal, got the part. And her character is in a relationship with Andrew Lincoln. It’s an interesting trio because she works for one and is having a bit of an affair with another, and he’s sort of a rival. She really showed in both of those things that she could have chemistry with both the leads of the show, which is fantastic.
